We are Sheryl and Robert and Boo Boo our Australian Shepherd. We are recently retired healthcare workers who in late 2018 bought our first RV, a 2019 Airstream 4×4 Interstate Nineteen and picked it up from Dave Arbogast RV in Troy, OH.
The Nineteen was nimble, we could park in a regular parking spot, and go anywhere.
In 2019 we travelled 17,800 miles, across the US to the West Coast, north into Canada and back home to the East Coast.
But the Nineteen had a few problems.
In 2019 we had Boo as well as out 20 year old cat, Mr. T so we had to carry pet food, beds for them, pet medicine, cat litter – the Nineteen did not have any outside storage and meager inside storage, so all the pet stuff was packed into plastic tubs which sat inside on the RV seats.
We experienced troubles from the day we acquired the Nineteen – the step would not retract, so we drove it to Jackson Center (Airstream Headquarters) and had the step replaced.
During our 2019 cross country trips, our kitchen sink plumbing fell apart, the roof leaked, there was a major problem with the wiring harness causing the rain sensor to fail on the Fantastic Fan, problems with charging the house battery and black tank warning issues.
In January 2020, we traded in the Nineteen for a larger 2020 Airstream Atlas – we went from 19 ft 5 in to 24 ft 9 in long and from 8,550 lbs to 11,000 lbs.
We now had external storage and more interior storage space but we needed to take 1.5 parking spaces and the Atlas was more of a lumbering giant – we named it Chunky.
We were ready to travel but in March 2020, the Covid pandemic hit, so we went nowhere for 14 months partly due to shut downs but also work commitments – Robert wasn’t allowed to go on a vacation or take a leave for over a year.
We took Chunky out on the road when travel restrictions eased and the temperature rose in April 2021.
